MSI officially announced two new nettop PCs, the Wind Box DE200 and the Wind Box DC200. Both of them are powered by Intel’s Atom 230 processor, like Acer’s AspireRevo R3600, and 1GB of memory.

The Wind Box DE200 gets an ATI Radeon HD 4350 graphics card with HDMI port while the onboard GMA950 graphics. They have a 160GB hard drive and a 6-in-1 memory card reader. WiFi 802.11b/g/n wireless connectivity is included.

The MSI Wind Box DE200 is available from Amazon for $299.99 and Wind Box DC200 for $249.

Shuttle rumored to be considering laptop range

Shuttle are best known for producing a wide range of small form factor PCs including complete systems and barebone units which can be filled with components to suit the user’s needs. The main selling points are the small size of the units, but also the high quality finish of the cases which aren’t out of place sitting next to your flatscreen TV.

Surprisingly the design aesthetics Shuttle are well-known for have never been applied to a product outside of its desktop range, but there are rumors that is about to change and Shuttle are considering manufacturing a line of laptops.

DigiTimes is reporting that Shuttle are issuing 150,000 new shares in order to raise capital and wants to build a new 40-person team for the design and production of the laptops. Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) has also been mentioned as a company housing the talent Shuttle needs and intend to tempt staff away from for its new team. ECS are a Taiwanese company specializing in the design of motherboards, but also manufacture a range of systems including barebones PCs and laptops.

ECS says it has no knowledge of any of its staff being approached and Shuttle has not released any information regarding such a move. The company did, however, recently unveil the X50 Touchscreen all-in-one PC which is a tablet PC with a carry handle and can be seen above.

Netbooks are clearly intended for light use and as a second machine for e-mail, Net surfing, and light office tasks. That’s due mainly to the limited power offered by the underlying hardware and the tiny screens to some extent. But it looks like netbooks are about to get a whole lot more powerful if a netbook on display in Japan is to become the norm.

The Japanese tech site Akiba PC Hotline has images of a new netbook from a company called Shenzhen Weibu Electronics. The specs of the machine can be seen in the image below:

As you can see, the Atom is a dual core 330 and has been married with Nvidia’s Ion 9400M graphics solution. Up until now such a configuration has only been seen in nettops and not netbooks.

The good news is you are clearly getting a much more powerful machine, but the power requirements will increase meaning attaining the 9 hour battery life some single core netbooks manage today isn’t going to happen. I’m betting most people may be able to put up with that in return for a faster machine though.

The cost of the Shenzhen netbook works out to roughly $527. The release date is unknown.

Microsoft's Pressure-Sensitive Keyboard Could Change The Way You Type

it's only a prototype at the moment, but the pressure-sensitive keyboard Microsoft has cooking up promises to make your typing far more efficient.

For example, font size could be changed based on how much pressure you apply to a key and typos could be reduced by gauging the pressure applied to simultaneously pressed keys in order to determine intent. And, of course, varied pressure on a key could make gaming controls more interesting.

Microsoft will be showing off the technology at the User Interface Software and Technology conference taking place in Canada this October. At the conference, students will be given a sample keyboard and asked to compete with one another in an effort to find applications for the technology that are useful, well implemented or creative. Intel's Platform Power Management: Like Milliscond Power Naps for Your Entire Computer

Intel Research showed me a demo of their Platform Power Management system. Essentially, they're applying the smart, quick, hardware level idling you find on a CPU to many system parts. The result: systems that idle at 10x less juice.

The tech is applied to things like USB ports, which in 3.0, will go from polling (clock based, always checking) devices to being managed via events, so they can sleep whenever not being used. And graphics, when the page isn't changing, can be run out of a frame buffer so the GPU and video RAM can sleep. When I say more sleep, I mean for additional milliseconds or longer. This adds up, over the course of a day when people stop to read or step away from their computers. In the past, the OS controlled the power savings, and that required power to process in turn, so you were using the system's power to manage power, keeping those other components from ever really turning off. By doing power management with more granularity, in hardware and software together, you can switching things on/off fast enough to fit in lots of "naps" and you can also do it with less processing overhead.

I'm excited for this tech to go everywhere where there's a chip.

Intel and Nokia Partner To Make Future Something-Or-Other

Just as reported, Intel and Nokia had a big fancy announcement to tell everyone that they're going to be doing something together in the future—the specifics of which wasn't important (or defined) enough to mention today.

The two did say that they're going to be sharing Nokia's HSPA/3G modem technology so Intel can put those into their own equipment, and that they're going to be all up in the open source world. Intel Launches New Desktop Processor

Following AMD’s launch of its latest server chips last week, it’s Intel’s turn to be in the spotlight.

Intel plans to launch its newest generation of desktop processors on Monday. Called Core i7, the chips are aimed at the high-end desktop and gaming market.

The move puts Intel ahead of its rival AMD by more than a few months, as AMD’s comparable desktop processor isn’t scheduled to launch until early next year.

"AMD now just doesn’t have a competitive chip against Intel on the desktop," says Patrick Wang, an analyst with brokerage firm Wedbush Morgan.

And until AMD launches its product, Intel is going to be the only option for consumers who want the latest chips for their computers, says Wang.

The Core i7 will be almost four to six times faster than Intel’s current platform, says the company, and will have greater power efficiency than ever. It is based on the 45-nanometer production technology that first appeared in a server chip called Xeon (aka Penryn), which debuted earlier this year.

The 45-nm chips utilize smaller circuitry than the previous, 65-nm generation, making them faster, and also enabling Intel to manufacture them more cheaply.

The new Core i7 chips are based on a newly designed microarchitecture called Nehalem, which includes major design changes in areas such as power management and integrated memory control.

The first three quad-core Core i7 chips from Intel will reintroduce "hyperthreading" technology, which gives the chips the ability to execute 8 threads simultaneously on 4 processing cores, greatly increasing their processing power. Hyperthreading was seen earlier in Pentium 4 chips and some Xeon processors from Intel.

Core i7 processors are also different from their predecessors in that they have "QuickPath," a new microarchitecture that integrates memory controller into each microprocessor. QuickPath will replace Front Side Bus used in
Xeon and Itanium platforms.

The move increases the bandwidth directly available to the processor, reducing lag time before a CPU can begin executing the next instruction.

"Core i7 will be one of the first Intel chips to integrate a memory controller," says Shane Rau, PC analyst at research firm IDC, "though it is something AMD has had for a while."

Intel is taking no chances with Core i7. The company has spent millions to test the chips and ensure flaws in it don’t trip it up, says The New York Times.

In the past, both Intel and AMD have paid a big price for bugs in their chips. In 1994, Intel’s Pentium chips sported a tiny error in floating-point calculation that led to a product recall.

More recently, AMD’s Barcelona range of chips that launched last year were delayed by months after discovery of flaws that among other things caused systems to lock up and crash.more

Intel's Moblin 2.0 Linux desktop for netbooks

Over the past few days I’ve been taking Intel’s Moblin 2.0 Linux desktop for netbooks for a spin. Can Intel compete with its long-time partner Microsoft in the operating system game?
Moblin has had an odd history. Back in April Intel handed over its Moblin mobile Linux project to the Linux Foundation and many took that as a sign that the chip giant wanted to walk away from the project. However, since then Intel announced that it was working with Novell to bring Moblin to netbook desktops.It seems that rather than walk away from Moblin, Intel wanted the project to be seen as a Linux project and not an Intel project.

Moblin is an interesting project that’s based on a Fedora Linux backbone, it uses a GNOME desktop and apps. But it’s also different from every Linux distro I’ve seen too.

So how is Moblin different? Well, rather than being application-centric like most operating systems, it’s function-centric. So rather than firing up a browser, you have a specific tab on the menu bar to change your Twitter status or access the Internet. The home screen, called the M-Zone, is the user’s command center for seeing what social network pals are up to and communicating with them.

Does this function-centric approach work? Well, personally I don’t think it does. When I first loaded it up I was confronted by a whole raft of mystery meat navigation. The only way to figure out what something did was to randomly click about and see what happened. I’m not sure if the problem boils down to the interface just not being usable, or to whether the OS still needs a lot of work doing to it. The current state of the OS seems to turn a netbook into a very limited device, and I can see some users never being able to figure out how to add useful applications such as office apps onto their netbook. The same complaint could be leveled at any Windows-based system, but Linux distros usually make downloading and installing more apps easy.

This project could deliver a nice, workable OS for netbooks, but for now I’m left feeling that the OS turns a netbook into a Fisher Price “My First Twittering Netbook” platform.more

Intel Set to Appeal EC's $1.44B Antitrust Fine

ntel Corp. said it plans to appeal last week's European Commission decision to fine the company for violating antitrust laws.

The EC found Intel guilty of paying rebates to computer manufacturers and to Europe's largest IT retailer, Media Markt, in order to keep systems based on chips from rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc. off of store shelves. Although the rebates did result in lower retail prices for PCs, EC Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes contended that they left consumers without a choice of technologies.

Dean McCarron, an analyst at Mercury Research, noted that the substantial fine "amounts to about $23 for every CPU sold in Europe last year."

During a hastily arranged press conference, Intel CEO Paul Otellini argued that the EC "ignored or disregarded" evidence "refuting" the antitrust charges. "There were a number of documents from OEMs or between Intel and OEMs that refute what was claimed here," he said.

Otellini disputed a key EC allegation: that Intel paid "conditional" rebates to PC makers to prevent them from purchasing chips from competitors. The EC "alleged exclusive deals but couldn't find them, so it said we must have hidden ," he said, adding that the EC "got all of the documents that they wanted . . . so I'm really baffled."

Michael Cooper, an antitrust attorney at Bryan Cave LLC, criticized the EC's decision. "It is hardly clear that the EU's action will benefit consumers. The consumer rarely benefits when enforcers take actions to protect less-efficient firms from the rigors of competition."

Kroes said the antitrust action will protect consumers. "Intel has harmed millions of EU consumers," so the large fine -- the largest antitrust penalty the EC has ever levied against a single company -- should "come as no surprise," she said.

If Intel fails in its appeal, McCarron said the company's pricing structure could become "less complicated," with no more rebates.

EU fines Intel $1.45 billion for sales tactics

The European Union fined Intel Corp. a record euro1.06 billion ($1.45 billion) on Wednesday, saying the world's biggest computer chip maker used illegal sales tactics to shut out smaller rival AMD.

The fine exceeded a euro899 million monopoly abuse penalty for Microsoft Corp. last year. Intel called the decision "wrong" and said it would appeal.

Intel, based in Santa Clara, California, has about 80 percent of the world's personal computer microprocessor market — and faces just one real rival, Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

The European Commission says Intel broke EU competition law by exploiting its dominant position with a deliberate strategy to keep AMD out of the market that limited customer choice.

It said Intel gave rebates to computer manufacturers Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo and NEC for buying all or almost all their x86 computer processing units, or CPUs, from Intel and paid them to stop or delay the launch of computers based on AMD chips.

Intel president and CEO Paul Otellini said the company would appeal to the EU courts because "the decision is wrong" and "there has been absolutely zero harm to consumers." The company promised to comply with the EU order but criticized it as extremely ambiguous.

AMD's Europe president Giuliano Meroni said the EU order "will shift the power from an abusive monopolist to computer makers, retailers and above all PC consumers."

Regulators said the company also paid Germany's biggest electronics retailer, Media Saturn Holding — which owns the MediaMarkt superstores — from 2002 to 2007 to only stock Intel-based computers.

This meant workers at AMD's biggest European plant in Dresden, Germany, could not buy AMD-based personal computers at their city's main PC store.

"Intel has harmed millions of European consumers by deliberately acting to keep competitors out of the market for computer chips for many years," said EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes. "Such a serious and sustained violation of the EU's antitrust rules cannot be tolerated."

Kroes joked that Intel would now have to change its latest global ad campaign — "sponsors of tomorrow" — to proclaiming "the sponsor of the European taxpayer."

"I can give my vision of tomorrow for Intel here and now: Abide by the law," she added.

EU regulators said they calculated Intel's fine on the value of its European chip sales over the five years and three months that it broke the law. Europeans buy some 30 percent of the euro22 billion ($30 billion) in computer chips sold every year.

They could have gone even higher as EU antitrust rules allow them to levy a fine of up to 10 percent of a company's annual global turnover for each year of bad behavior. Intel's worldwide turnover was euro27.9 billion ($38.8 billion) in 2007.

European consumers group BEUC welcomed the fine and said Intel should be held to account to consumers through civil suits in European courts. So far these are rare but the EU is urging victims of antitrust action to seek damages.

"Intel should be liable to compensate the victims of its illegal practices," said Monique Goyens, head of the group. "Consumers have been paying too much for their computers and they should be compensated."

The manufacturer rebates started in 2002, the EU said, with most ending in 2005 — apart from a 2007 deal for one unidentified company to only source notebook computer chips from Intel.

Regulators said rebates that give discounts for large orders are illegal when a monopoly company makes them conditional on buying less of a rival's products or not buying them at all.

Manufacturers depend on Intel to supply most of the chips they need and faced higher costs if they lost most or all of a rebate by choosing AMD chips for even a small order.

Hewlett-Packard buys a fifth of Intel chips with Dell taking 18 percent, according to market research from Hoovers.

The discounts were so steep that only a rival that sold chips for less than they cost to make would have any chance of grabbing customers, the EU executive said.

It said AMD offered 1 million free chips to one manufacturer — which could not accept because that would lose it a rebate on many millions of other chips. It only took 160,000 free chips in the end, regulators said.

Intel's payments to manufacturers ordered the company to delay the European launch of AMD's first business desktop by six months. They were also paid to only sell the AMD line to small and medium companies and to only offer them directly to customers instead of to retailers.

Other manufacturers were paid to postpone the launch of AMD-based notebooks by several months, from September 2003 to January 2004 and from September 2006 to the end of 2006 — missing the key Christmas market.

The European Commission said Intel tried to conceal the conditions attached to these payments and details only emerged from e-mails that regulators seized in surprise raids on the companies.

Regulators refused to rule out returning to other parts of their probe where they had investigated Intel's behavior in the server market and allegations of below-cost pricing designed to hurt AMD. Intel strongly denies these charges.

The EU charges also cover a time when AMD managed to take market share from Intel by launching higher performance microprocessors for servers in 2003, previously an Intel stronghold.

Intel fought back successfully by rolling out Core chips. More recently, it has grabbed more market share with Atom chips for netbooks.

EU regulators are not the only ones chasing Intel — South Korea fined the company $21 million last year.

And the U.S. may be stepping up action. The Federal Trade Commission upgraded a probe into Intel last year — and as the Obama administration is set to take a more aggressive approach against monopoly abuse by reversing a strict interpretation of antitrust law that saw regulators shun such cases.more

For almost $1,000 we expect a higher level of quality for a notebook. If the cost of the dv3510nr was between $500 and $600 some of the problems could be overlooked. On that note, HP currently offers the AMD-equipped dv3z for $679.99 if you are looking for an alternative to the Intel configuration.

Intel is expanding its cooperation with small Chinese PC makers as it offers partners netbook designs tweaked for niche customers in China.

The designs are part of a program targeting small PC manufacturers that aims to tap new markets for Intel's Atom microprocessor in netbooks, or ultra-portable notebooks, an Intel spokesman said Tuesday.

The program, called Hurdle, offers designs that meet specific price targets and the hardware and software requirements of Intel's Chinese partners, the spokesman said.

The designs are based on Intel's 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor and are intended for netbooks running Linux with 8.9-inch or 10.2-inch screens and priced as low as 1,750 yuan (US$256), according to Chinese media reports.

Intel sees netbooks as a "significant opportunity" in China and elsewhere, said Anand Chandrasekher, senior vice president and general manager of Intel's Ultra Mobility Group, speaking at the Intel Developer Forum in Beijing last week.

Intel is following an industry trend by turning to small Chinese manufacturers to boost its sales in a troubled economy, said Simon Ye, an analyst at Gartner.

Small Chinese PC makers have a tarnished image and are known in local slang as "mountain stronghold" firms for quality problems and generic brand names one might expect of companies found in undeveloped areas.

That reputation discouraged hardware providers from dealing with the firms until the recent rise of netbooks made low-cost products essential, Ye said. PCs from small manufacturers in China sell best to cost-sensitive consumers often outside of booming coastal cities.

But "mountain stronghold" netbooks doing well in the recession may not remain popular in China for long, Ye said. Users will still be willing to pay more for a netbook from another firm if quality issues afflict the small brands, he said.

Intel has revealed two more chips in its popular Atom range, and is looking to paper the world with a billion mobile internet devices

At its developer forum in Beijing, Intel has unveiled two more chips in its popular Atom range, which is now just a year old. The Z550 takes the clock speed up to 2GHz with Hyperthreading (HT) support, which compares with the 1.6GHz of the N270 version most commonly used in today's netbooks. Average power consumption is 220mW, with 100mW idle power.

The Z515 is an 800MHz-to-1.2GHz chip that delivers "performance on demand" using Intel's Burst Performance Technology (Intel BPT). Average power consumption is 160mW, with 80mW idle power.

Atom performance is mediocre in comparison to Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad designs. However, the low power requirements can provide long battery life in netbooks, and get Intel into areas of the market previously dominated by devices running ARM-based processors.

Anand Chandrasekher, general manager of Intel's Ultra Mobility Group, said Atom chips would support Windows 7 Starter and Basic editions in the second half of this year, as well as XP Home and Vista Basic. He also said Intel's next-generation MID (mobile internet device) platform, codenamed Moorestown, was scheduled to appear "by 2010". Intel says:

Moorestown consists of a System on Chip (codenamed "Lincroft") that integrates a 45nm Intel® Atom processor core, graphics, video and memory controller. The MID platform also includes an input/output (I/O) hub, codenamed "Langwell," that includes a range of I/O blocks and supports various wireless solutions.

The System on Chip approach should reduce manufacturing costs for netbooks and MIDs, while allowing designers to create smaller systems.

A typical MID should have a 4 inch to 7 inch screen and no keyboard, which is the area between smart phones and netbooks. It's an area Microsoft targeted with its Origami UMPC (ultramobile PC) project early in 2006. It is an understatement to say this was not a success.

Acer Aspire 8935, 5935 and 3935 Notebook PCs

Intel Atom Turns One With New 2GHz, 1.2GHz Models

It's been a year since Intel fired the opening salvo against regular-size laptopping with its Atom processor. Now, the Z series gets its expected speed bump, and at the bottom end, a low-power MID-oriented model.

The Atom Z550 takes the Atom to heretofore unseen speeds of 2.0GHz, while maintaining a sub-3W power envelope. Obviously, this speed gain is a good thing, but our enthusiasm is dampered by the fact that this is based on familiar, unexciting tech; the Z series "Silverthorn" processors may be power-thrifty and capable, but their architecture hasn't changed much with the new processors. A speed bump and the addition of hyperthreading are appreciated, but these marginal boosts won't be game changers.

On the other side of the performance spectrum, the Z515 winds the processor clock way down. Intel claims that Intel Performance Burst Technology "enables the processor to run at 1.2GHz when performance is needed", scaling up from an idle speed of 800MHz. The Z series processors were originally intended for low power applications like MIDs, and although the Z550 will likely make its way to netbooks, the Z515 is comfortable right where it is, thanks.

But as I've said, these aren't a huge step for Intel, and won't make a massive difference to consumers. For that, you'll have to wait for the new Moorestown platform, based around the 45nm "Lincroft" Atoms, a prototype of which Intel broke out at the conference, just to tease us. Product Overview

Smoke is a tech demo that showcases a framework to support n-way threading of game technologies. By properly threading a game it can have more accurate physics, smarter AI, more particles, and/or a faster frame-rate. Smoke demonstrates one way to achieve better games.

All of the source code for Smoke is available for download.

The demo includes:

A: You can read the license here. The goal is to allow developers to use the Smoke code written by Intel for any purpose (including derivative works) with no limitations or obligations.

Primary Technical Contacts

Orion Granatir is a senior engineer in the Visual Computing Software Division. He is the Tech Lead on the Smoke project. Prior to joining Intel in 2007, Orion worked on several PlayStation 3 titles as a senior programmer with Insomniac Games. His most recent published titles are Resistance: Fall of Man and Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction.

Canon offers three new REALiS LCD multimedia projectors, including the LV-8300, its first native WXGA widescreen; the LV-7375 and LV-7370. The LV-8300 features a 1280×800 resolution with 3000 lumens brightness. The other two models have 1024×768 resolution and 3500 lumens and 3000 lumens brightness respectively.

All three projectors have 500:1 contrast ratio and 1.2x zoom lens. They all offer Whiteboard mode, screen color correction and an ergonomic design. They accpets DVI-I, D-Sub, S-Video, Composite inputs. All models ahve integrated 7W speakers and an Ethernet port.

Canon REALiS LV-8300 and LV-7375 and LV-7370 are priced at $1,399m $1,799 and $1,299 respectively.

Asus Eee PC 1002H Netbook

Asus presents the new Eee PC 1002H mini laptop that offers up to 5 hours of battery life. The Eee PC 1002H is powered by an Intel Atom N280 processor, 1GB RAM, 160GB hard drive and integrated grahics. It comes with a 10-inch LED-backlit 1024×600 display, a 1.3 Megapixel webcam, and a 3-in-1 card reader.

The Eee PC 1002H supports WiFi 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.0 EDR. It has built-in stereo speakers and digital array microphone. The netbook has chiclet keyvvoard and supports multi-touch gesture input.

The netbook will be available in Pink, White and Black. No words on availability and pricing.
