Intel Board Elects Two New Directors Carol Bartz to Retire

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 19, 2009 – Intel Corporation today announced that John J. Donahoe, president and CEO of eBay Inc., and Frank D. Yeary, vice chancellor of the University of California Berkeley (UC Berkeley), have been elected to serve on Intel's board of directors. The company also announced that Carol A. Bartz, CEO of Yahoo! Inc., is retiring from the board.

"We are very pleased to have John Donahoe and Frank Yeary join the Intel board," said Paul Otellini, Intel president and CEO. "Both John and Frank bring a wealth of strategic business and financial experience that will assist us now and going forward. Intel and the board are sorry to see Carol Bartz leave. We thank her for her service on our board and wish her all the best at her new job at Yahoo!"

Donahoe, 48, has served as eBay president and CEO since 2008. He joined eBay in 2005 and oversaw core business areas including the company's global e-commerce businesses, where he doubled revenues and profits for the division. He has also been responsible for a number of strategic acquisitions. Prior to joining eBay, Donahoe spent more than 20 years at Bain & Company, a worldwide consulting firm, serving last as CEO. In addition to serving on eBay's board of directors, Donahoe is on the board of trustees of Dartmouth College. He received his bachelor's degree in economics from Dartmouth College and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Yeary, 45, is an adviser to the chancellor and his senior staff on strategic and financial issues important to the university. He is also guiding the university's long-range financial strategy and providing financial expertise for global research and education partnerships between the public and private sectors. Prior to this appointment in 2008, Yeary retired as global head of mergers and acquisitions for Citigroup after nearly 25 years in finance. In addition to serving on the UC Berkeley Foundation board, he is on the board of WNYC Radio. Yeary received his bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley in economics and history.

HP, Intel And Yahoo Announce Massive Cloud Computing Project

Seeking to avoid being left behind, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, and Yahoo announced Tuesday their joint project, The HP, Intel, and Yahoo Cloud Computing Test Bed. That is exactly what it is, an open-source project with data centers around the globe to enable large-scale research of cloud computing.

There will be initially six data centers with HP servers powered by Intel processors, each with 1,000 to 4,000 processor cores. As one server usually has eight cores nowadays (dual Xeon quadcore), it means that each center will host 125 to 500 servers. The six locations will be one at each of Hewlett-Packard, Intel, and Yahoo, and at the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, the University of Illinois, and the Steinbuch Centre for Computing in Germany. The National Science Foundation will also be involved as part of the work being done at the University of Illinois, the companies said.

The three companies will also allow pre-selected researchers to test new applications. The servers will run open-source software such as the Apache Software Foundation's Apache Hadoop distributed computing technology and Pig, a parallel programming language developed by Yahoo's research and development unit.

What this means is HP and Intel will use their hardware muscles, whereas Yahoo will be essential in contributing its expertise. Prith Banerjee, senior vice president of Research at HP and director of HP Labs, said in the joint statement that The HP, Intel and Yahoo! Cloud Computing Test Bed will allow tapping the brightest minds in the industry, academia and government to drive innovation in the field of cloud computing.

All three companies have shown interest in cloud computing before. In June, Yahoo announced the creation of a Cloud Computing & Data Infrastructure Group. Intel Research previously unfolded a cloud computing project, called the Universal Parallel Computing Research Centers. HP, earlier this year, announced the formation of its Scalable Computing & Infrastructure Organization (SCI), which includes a dedicated set of resources that provide expertise and spearhead development efforts to build scalable solutions designed for high-performance and cloud computing customers.

IBM is another major player in cloud computing. Last October, Google and IBM announced a joint investment of about $20-25 million in what is known as “cloud computing”, a type of data center that uses parallel computing and virtualization to maximize computing power per server.

Google’s partnership with IBM includes the acquisition of the hardware, the software and the services needed for the cloud-computing initiative. The project started with a data center of only 400 computers, but the two companies’ CEOs have pledged the extension of the “cloud” to more than 4,000, scattered in different locations.

IBM also produces a series of cloud computing solutions for corporate data centers. The solutions family, dubbed "Blue Cloud," enable large pools of systems that are linked together to provide various IT services. Blue Cloud includes support for systems with Power and x86 processors and is managed by IBM Tivoli software which manages multiple servers to ensure optimal performance based on demand.

Remote for iPhone or iPod touch can't connect to iTunes or Apple TV

Symptoms
If you are experiencing an issue where you can't pair Remote with iTunes or Apple TV or are having difficulty connecting to an iTunes library or Apple TV that you've already paired with and connected to before, review the troubleshooting suggestions listed in this article.
Products Affected
iTunes 7 for Mac, iTunes 7 for Windows, AppleTV, iPhone, iPod touch, iPhone 3G, iTunes 8 for Windows, iTunes 8 for Mac, iPod touch (2nd generation)
Resolution
Local Network Connectivity
Remote needs to be connected via Wi-Fi to the same local network that iTunes or Apple TV is connected to in order to pair and control those libraries. You can determine if your devices are on the same local network if their network configuration specifies the same router IP address. The router address will be a set of 4 numbers separated by periods. To locate your devices router IP address, navigate to the following locations:
iPhone or iPod touch: Settings > Wi-Fi > [Network Name]
Apple TV: Settings > General > Network
Mac OS X: Apple menu > System Preferences > Network
Windows XP: Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > [Network Connection Name] > Properties > TCP/IP Properties
Windows Vista: Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > View Status > Properties > TCP/IPv4 Properties
Check System Requirements
The iTunes library or Apple TV that you are connecting Remote to must meet the system requirements in order to connect properly. For information about system requirements, see About Remote for iPhone and iPod touch.
iTunes Settings
In order to connect Remote with iTunes, iTunes must be open on your Mac or PC. You must also have the iTunes preference "Look for iPhone and iPod touch Remotes" enabled. This setting is enabled by default, however you can verify that it is enabled in the Devices tab of iTunes preferences.
A maximum of five Remotes can be paired to either iTunes or Apple TV. If this limit has been reached and a new Remote needs to be paired, remove Remote pairings in iTunes or Apple TV. In iTunes, click the Forget All Remotes button in the Devices tab of iTunes preferences. On Apple TV, choose Settings > General > Remotes.
Firewall Settings
If you have a firewall enabled in your router or computer, make sure that the firewall is not blocking communication between Remote and your iTunes or Apple TV. Remote uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with your iTunes or Apple TV. To configure your firewall to add these ports:
For Mac OS X 10.5, you don't have to edit the port addresses, but make sure the firewall is not set to "Allow only essential services" as described here.
For Mac OS X 10.4.11 and earlier please follow these instructions.
For Windows Vista Firewall please follow these instructions.
For Windows XP Firewall please follow these instructions.
If you use other firewall software or hardware check the software documentation on how to open these ports.
